The Infinite Game - Delivered by Stephen Shedletzky of Simon Sinek's Optimist Company

We can't choose the game. We can't choose the rules. We can only choose how we play. In finite games, like football or chess, the players are known, the rules are fixed, and the endpoint is clear. The winners and losers are easily identified. In infinite games, like business or politics or life itself, the players come and go, the rules are changeable, and there is no defined endpoint. There are no winners or losers in an infinite game; there is only ahead and behind. The more we begin to understand the difference between finite and infinite games, the more we can see that infinite games are all around us. We will realize that many of the struggles that organizations face exist because their leaders are playing an infinite game with a finite mindset. These organizations tend to lag in innovation, effort, morale, and overall performance. In stark contrast, the leaders who embrace an infinite mindset build stronger, more innovative, more inspiring organizations. Their people trust each other and their leaders. With an infinite mindset, leaders have the resilience to thrive in an ever-changing world while their competitors fall by the wayside. Ultimately, they are the ones who lead the rest of us into the future. Key takeaways: ● See that we are all players in both finite and infinite games and be able to distinguish the difference between the two ● Learn the five practices that are required to lead in an infinite game ● Explore a new way of looking at your leadership, your organization, and the environment in which it operates ● Explore the characteristics of a Just Cause and relate it to your organization ● Examine the practices that are building trust and those that may be breaking trust, and how to maintain and rebuild trust ● Define and study your Worthy Rivals to identify areas of strength and areas to improve ● Gain a deeper understanding of Existential Flexibility, explore case studies and evaluate your current capacity for Existential Flexibility ● Learn how to build stronger relationships, which is the basis of The Courage to Lead

Target Value Delivery Workshop

Target Value Delivery (TVD) is a lean operating system developed by, and for our industry to help improve project delivery performance in any contractual arrangement. The integrated form of agreement, known in Canada as IPD, was created and structured to help teams to fully leverage the potential of such operating system.  Industry based Lean operating systems such as TVD are too often overlooked or only utilized conceptually are at a front-end of projects, leaving IPD projects with untapped potential. This emergent area of practice has been made more complicated with variation in naming and approaches. This workshop is intended to utilize a simulation to illustrate the key differences between Traditional Delivery and Target Value Delivery and highlight the opportunity available for teams to improve the performance of their capital project. This will be delivered by members of Lean Design & Construction Canada (LDCC).

Colliers Project Leaders

Carla is a Lean and IPD advisor and coach who happens to be an industrial engineer working in the construction industry. She started her career in Procter & Gamble at a time when they were practicing an integrated work system and high performing team approach to what is now named ‘Lean’, using the Toyota business system as motivation (meaning holistically and beyond the production line).

After working abroad, Carla returned to Western Canada and built Ternion Results as a successful 15 -year consulting practice that supports a diverse range of organizations across private, public, and not-for-profits. It was during this time that Carla started intensely working within the design and construction community as a Lean Operational Excellence and Lean Project Delivery coach and has now worked with every player within the construction ecosystem including owners, architects, engineers, general contractors, trades and suppliers. As many know, Lean Project Delivery objectives can only fully be realized when motivations are aligned, contracts are relational and the operating systems are robust. Which is what has drawn Carla to engage and advance use of IPD as the ultimate in collaborative delivery models! In November 2021, Carla joined Colliers Project Leaders to work with the Owners community and continues to support IPD teams broadly in growing and developing use of Lean and IPD in Canada.

Panel Discussion - Facing the Fear Factor: What are the Countermeasures to Solve IPD Challenges?

A facilitated panel discussion from the Owner’s Rep (Colliers), Contractor (Unitech), and Design Team (Stantec) perspective for a holistic 360 review of IPD using real world experiences using a PDCA format. The presentation’s questions are aimed at eliminating the fear of things going wrong in an IPD by showcasing why and how things went wrong when striving for perfection in a new delivery model that has been claimed to be the leading delivery model on the market. The presentation will then shift to understand the countermeasures of how the team and project were realigned and the tools used to get the project back on track through different real project examples such as what to do when there is a non-collaborative IPD team member. The intention of showcasing that things can and do go wrong in an IPD and how the team can collaborate to make the project a success is to reduce the fear of IPD for all parties involved and strengthen the adoption of the delivery model. Going full circle, the final questions are directed at how overcoming unexpected obstacles and challenges drives the team to innovate towards perfection in an IPD through open communication, transparency and collaboration.

IPD - Ready Set Go … No Go - &. Unleashing Construction Innovation with IPD

Our industry has been pummeled by supply chain disruptions, climate impacts, hyper escalation, rising inflation and mounting labour shortages. Interest in IPD has increased in response to these challenges but are we looking for a quick fix or true transformation? Not every project, every owner or every team member is a fit for IPD but how do you evaluate that fit for the delivery model? Using lessons learned from over 30 IPD projects we will explore how to evaluate the readiness of a project, an owner and a market prior to launch. Learn how to align delivery with organizational structure or manage process and cultural changes needed for success.

Beyond readiness learn how to set up a team to unlock greater collaboration and innovation to improve project outcomes. Learn how to plan a successful execution under widely different conditions ranging from seasoned teams in mature markets to entirely new teams assembled in unfamiliar markets. Consider key strategies and approaches that can be implemented to: enhance holistic integrated problem solving, increase the utilization of technology and how to better target big drivers of project value.

Finally consider when to say no to IPD if the model is not a fit.

Unleashing Construction Innovation with IPD

Our industry has been through massive upheaval driven by escalation, supply chain disruptions, climate impacts, a growing housing crisis and labour shortages. In response to these conditions, we have seen an increased investment in technology, a rise in collaborative delivery models and potential applications of Machine Learning and Generative AI are emerging through the construction industry. Learn why construction may be uniquely positioned to become a driver of innovation, like the Aerospace Industry in the 1960s. Learn why a simple return to normal would be a tragic lost opportunity for the industry to undergo true transformative change.

Explore how the industry and your organization may start on a path to transformation as we move from silos to integrated solutions. Consider how low construction productivity masks massive potential for gains and the project-based nature of our work allows us to iterate new approaches rapidly. Explore what change is necessary and possible in our industry, how we attract and retain the brightest young minds, and how we might use our most significant current and emerging challenges as catalysts for deeper transformation.

How Retrofitting Existing Buildings Using IPD Enables Clients to Achieve Emission Neutral Goals - Panel Presentation

The City of Edmonton’s Expo Renewal Project was not just a first for them using the IPD contract, it was also one of the first retrofit / renewal projects to utilize the IPD contract in Canada. The IPD process enabled the City to determine a pragmatic roadmap of upgrades that aligns with their Emissions Neutral by 2040 Policy for all City owned buildings. This is the first time a facilities project was able to deliver a detailed report that included market costing. The team who executed this project had worked on several new construction IPD projects, but it became clear early on in Validation that the process for retrofits is quite different. Learn more about the City of Edmonton’s roadmap to emissions neutral and how the IPD process is different from new construction.

IPD: A Vehicle for Implementing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion - simultanious french translation.

There are numerous studies that show that the more diverse a team, the better the result to problem solving; however, there is a big constraint limiting true DEI implementation - and that is ourselves! When situations get ‘uncomfortable’, we pull away and revert to old ways of working that are ‘easier’. This session will provide you with tangible IPD processes and culture-building techniques that will help get your teams to get comfortable with the uncomfortable to enable DEI to truly have sticking power! These skillsets can be adopted and implemented on any delivery type or any team culture. IPD just makes it easier!
